This book is an adaptation of Hendrick Hamel’s journal, “Verhaal van het vergaan van het jacht de Sperwer En van het wedervaren der schipbreukelingen op het eiland Quelpaert en het vasteland van Korea (1653-1666) met eene beschrijving van dat rijk,” written during his 14-year isolation in Korea after he was accidentally shipwrecked there in the 15th century while working for the Dutch East India Company. The book is based on various events experienced by an outsider entering European society. After being shipwrecked from a stowaway boat, ‘I’ arrive in the fictional European city ‘the Land R’ and write a journal and an account of the country, following the format Hamel used to describe Joseon (now Korea) in the 15th century.
