A spin-off publication inspired by The Journal of the Unfortunate Voyage of the Jaght the Sperwer (known in Korea as Hamel’s Journal), the record of a Dutchman who drifted ashore in Joseon and lived there for 13 years and 8 months in the 17th century.
In this reimagined tale, “I,” attempting to escape “Hell-Joseon,” become shipwrecked and stranded in the fictional land of R, encountering people who are at once foolish, kind, and cruel—and unexpectedly, the companion “Luggage Girl.”
This work rewrites Hamel’s account—originally shaped by the monotheistic worldview of the colonial era—into new geographies and times.
*Includes an opening section introducing common misconceptions about Hamel’s Journal and a brief guide to the original text.

Recasting Hendrick Hamel’s Journal of the Unfortunate Voyage of the Sperwer—one of the earliest European records on Joseon—through new perspectives of space, time, and gender.
The book interlaces diaries, interviews, and cultural descriptions of the fictional Land R, constructing narratives with lingering symbols of colonial modernity and fictional characters. Readers are invited to confront the uneasy shadow of history with the question: “Am I a wanderer, or one who adapts to this place?”
*Conceived as an expanded form of the video installation What Has Been Will Be Again, What Has Been Done Will Be Done Again—a silent black-and-white film that portrays a visual drift through the imaginary Land R.

In this book, I wrote about the three meanings of the German word ‘Jungfrau’ as a foreigner in relation to the practice 《Jungfrau vs Jungfrau》. I also wrote about the noun ‘Piano’, which was only described as a place around my childhood, the term ‘Bluffing’ is about historical facts related to the practice 《Bluffing: Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe / Olympia.
